Mother of Perpetual Help
Mary of Perpetual Help is a Byzantine icon of the Cretan school, a representative image of the Virgin of the Passion. The general interpretation is clear. The archangels Gabriel and Michael present to the infant Jesus the instruments of his future sufferings. Upon contemplating this dramatic vision, the Child, in his condition of mortal man, is frightened and trembles and in a sudden movement seeks help in the arms of his Mother, to whose hand he clings tightly. The fright and sudden movement of the Child are expressed by the contortion of his legs, the folding of his cloak and the detached sandal.
