The devotion …
The history of this Marian devotion dates back to about 1200. A group of hermits, inspired by the writings of the prophet Elijah, went to dwell on Mount Karmel, which means Garden of God. There they founded the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Later, on the 16th of July 1251, Our Lady appeared to the superior sextor of the order, St. Simon Stock. The Virgin Mary gave the Saint the scapular, a sacramental meant to inspire a holy life and increase devotion. It has become the main symbol identifying the Carmelite order.
The scapular is also the promise Our Lady made to St. Simon Stock: “This must be a sign and privilege for you and for all Carmelites: whoever dies wearing the scapular will not suffer eternal fire.”
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is also known as the Star of the Sea, and is the patron saint of sailors. In America she is the patroness of Chile; she is queen of the region of Cuenca and Azuay, receiving the pontifical coronation on July 16, 2002.
