St. John of the Cross
John lived in a time of deep spiritual hunger and great reform within the Church. It was the 16th century—a period marked by the Counter-Reformation, intense religious renewal, and the challenges of ecclesial transformation. Born in Spain, he became a leading figure in the Carmelite reform alongside St. Teresa of Avila.
The gift of God to John—through which he reached holiness and left an indelible legacy on the Church—is threefold: He was a mystic; he was a poet; he was a reformer.
His writings, especially The Dark Night of the Soul and The Ascent of Mount Carmel, continue to guide souls seeking union with God through silence, detachment, and profound interior prayer.
In 1926, he was declared a Doctor of the Church, recognized for his deep theological insight and unmatched spiritual wisdom.
