The story behind the image …

Our Lady of Czestochowa, also known as the Black Madonna of Poland, is a Marian devotion whose origin is due to a very famous painting of the Blessed Virgin with the Child Jesus in her arms.

The famous image follows the traditional form of an icon. Mary makes a gesture towards Jesus, drawing attention away from her and presenting Jesus as the Savior. The infant Jesus holds a book of the Gospels in his left hand and extends his right hand in blessing to the viewer.

The sacred icon is famous for its countless miracles, which is why today so many pilgrims from Poland, Europe and the rest of the world visit the Marian Shrine of Jasna Gora every year.
